The Chlachain Inn

Restaurant | Mallaig | Scotland | United Kingdom

The Chlachain Inn in Mallaig, a picturesque fishing village on the west coast of Scotland, presents itself as a modern Scottish pub and restaurant with an inviting ambiance. The name "Chlachain" means "stone house" in Gaelic, reflecting the historical significance of the building, which was constructed around 1900. Following a comprehensive renovation in 2018, the inn now offers a bright and contemporary interior design.

The menu at the Chlachain Inn reflects the culinary diversity of Scotland and places particular emphasis on local ingredients. A highlight is the "Steak Frites" offered on the specials board, which is highly regarded by guests for its tenderness and intense flavor.

For vegetarians and vegans, the restaurant also offers options, including a vegan burger. However, some guests report that the selection is limited and certain ingredients such as vegan buns or sauces may be missing.

In addition to the menu, the Chlachain Inn offers an extensive selection of Scottish whiskies and gins that can be enjoyed in the cozy atmosphere of the pub. Most Saturdays feature live music for entertainment, and Thursdays host a quiz. A dartboard is available for sporting activities.

The inn has three modern en-suite rooms that provide comfortable accommodations for travelers. Each room is tastefully decorated and offers a high standard to ensure guests a pleasant stay.

Overall, the Chlachain Inn is a popular meeting place for locals and visitors alike, combining traditional Scottish hospitality with modern amenities.

Cannot comment on the rooms but the restaurant was not good. Bland food. Soup microwaved and still had skin on top. Ciabatta was a sandwich- suggest they look up a picture of a ciabatta. Bad smell from toilets polluting the rear section of the eating area.

Very rude hosts, had to cancel due to the storm and didn't receive any sort of acknowledgement of my email just had the bill. They have a cancellation policy which is their business but when you cancel over 24 hours before due to a storm being of threat to life you do hope for at least an email thanking for letting them know...

We received a warm welcome and felt so comfortable and "at home" in our twin bedded room which was accessed by outside steps. As a snack lunch we each had a bowl of their home made soup - very tasty and quite filling. For our evening meal we both chose their Venison steak with cabbage an sauté potatoes and it was the nicest we've ever tasted. As their room rates include breakfast but we needed to catch the eary ferry to Skye they kindly provided 2 packed lunches. Exceptional friendly service. The hotel is within 5 minutes walk of both the rail station and the ferry to Skye and the Small Isles.

A totally polar experience from the previous reviewer but probably more in keeping with the majority. We found the Chlachain Inn superb. A lovely room and fantastic food. I had the haggis to start, followed by the chowder. Both were otherworldly. The smoked haddock (in the chowder )was definitely the highlight for me and on another level. My wife had scallops and red snapper. Compliments to the chef as all was superb and far higher quality than we were expecting for the price. The staff were friendly and helpful too. We stayed as the Inn is very close to the ferry and we booked the 8:40 crossing. It was too early for breakfast at 8:00 so they kindly prepared us a takeaway lunch. What a lovely touch and a brilliant lunch it was too. Overall highly recommended.

We stopped here for a spot of lunch, whilst visiting Mallig and it did not disappoint. We had fish and chips and was Amazing! We also tried the haggis fritter which was full of flavor. Would highly recommend and reasonably priced. Service was welcoming and prompt. Top scores

Basic accommodations but a very good dinner -the seafood “chowder” is really a stew with more than two dozen mussels! It’s huge (suggest a half portion for us lighter appetites). Nice selection of whisky and an excellent local ale on hand pump. Breakfast was disappointing sausages were likely leftover and reheated and inedible, a snotty egg topped off our disappointment with the meal. However, the prices are reasonable for what it is including the room.

I recently visited a restaurant and had a very disappointing experience. The behavior of the waitresses and the manager was extremely unwelcoming and unprofessional. They seemed indifferent and even rude at times, which made the entire dining experience unpleasant. The service was poor, and it felt like they were more interested in getting us out quickly rather than providing a good experience. I would not recommend this place to tourists or anyone looking for a pleasant meal. There are plenty of other establishments that offer better service and a more welcoming atmosphere.

We were on a group tour and took the Jacobite train from Fort William to Mallaig. We did not know we would be having lunch in Mallaig, but had a little over an hour there to find something. The main road restaurants were very busy, so we headed up the hill and found The Chlachain Inn. We looked at their menu and decided to give it a try. So glad we did! The ambiance, food, and service were all excellent! We would definitely go back if we end up in Mallaig again and highly recommend them!

Fuimos a cenar.
